Updated AAHomecare Tracker Shows Supplier Numbers Still Shrinking
Sixteen states showed losses of more than 40% of their HME supplier locations.

May 8, 2026 by Laurie Watanabe

An updated American Association for Homecare (AAHomecare) location tracker shows the number of home medical equipment (HME) supplier locations nationwide shrinking with the exception of just one state.

The tracking sheet, now updated with January 2026 statistics, “shows there are approximately 8,078 traditional DMEPOS [durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies] supplier locations nationwide,” AAHomecare said in an April 29 announcement. “Since the widespread implementation of DMEPOS competitive bidding in 2013, we’ve observed an overall decline of about 37.4% in the total number of supplier locations.”

With the new data, Vermont is the only state showing an increase in supplier locations, from 21 (in July 2013) to 32 (in January 2026).

All other states have lost supplier locations, with every state except Vermont and North Dakota (-6.5%) showing loss percentages in double digits.

The state with the highest percentage loss is Connecticut (-55.9%), which went from 111 supplier locations to 49. Illinois also lost more than half its supplier locations (-51%), with just 244 locations still in business compared to a starting number of 498.

Fifteen additional states lost more than 40% of its locations during that time period: California (-41.2%), Delaware (-47.6%), Florida (-41.1%), Georgia (-45.1%), Kentucky (-42.2%), Louisiana (-46.6%), Maryland (-42.9%), New Jersey (-47.3%), New Mexico (-43.4%), Ohio (-46.1%), Oklahoma (-47.2%), South Carolina (-46.7%), Tennessee (-42.2%), Virginia (-48%) and Wisconsin (-42.6%).

Texas lost the highest number of supplier locations, going from 1,174 to 753, a loss of 421 locations (-35.9%). California lost the second highest number, going from 994 to 584, a loss of 410 locations.
