The latest launch from WHILL Inc. is aimed at active seniors, but also addresses a balance issue common to many three-wheeled scooters.
In a March 20 news announcement, WHILL launched the Model Ri, which the Tokyo-based manufacturer described as “an urban mobility scooter designed for active seniors with the best-in-class turning radius and first and only electronic stability control in the industry.”
“The Model Ri incorporates stability, maneuverability, and portability, making it ideal for navigating busy streets and crowded indoor spaces,” the manufacturer said in the announcement. “The dual-motor system provides smooth control and the tightest turning radius in its class, maximizing mobility indoors and outdoors. The Model Ri utilizes independent suspension and a stabilizer for electronic stability control, helpful while navigating tight turns, curbs, and other common obstacles.”
While the designs of some three-wheeled scooters can make them prone to tipping, “the Model Ri’s steering angle sensor automatically adjusts speed when turning, to ensure users are safe, comfortable, and confident,” the announcement said.
Consumers can use WHILL’s smartphone app to enhance their riding experiences by using features including keyless power-on and three drive modes. The Eco drive mode was designed for efficiency during longer journeys, while the Standard mode is for everyday commuting, and the Sport mode is designed for increased speed.
Model Ri users can also use the app to track their mileage, battery level and charge cycles.
The scooter was designed with a minimalistic aesthetic, with an ergonomic seat and a backrest incorporating breathable mesh fabric for comfort. “Personal stye can be expressed further with color options for the tiller cover,” the announcement added. “The scooter is ISO 13485 certified for medical grade safety and quality.”
“At WHILL, we recognized a pressing need for a new approach to urban mobility for active seniors,” said Satoshi Sugie, WHILL’s co-founder and CEO. “With the Model Ri, we aimed to create more than a scooter – we envisioned a companion that offers stability, easy maneuverability, and a simple design that appeals to everyone. We are proud that the Model Ri is the first scooter of its kind to have an accompanying application that ensures users are in control of their own experience.”
WHILL’s new Model Ri will be in the manufacturer’s booth (#1007) at Medtrade in Dallas, March 27-28.
