CMS will host a Special Open Door Forum on Aug. 12 that will serve as a question and answer session on Medicare’s expanded prior authorization demonstration for power mobility devices demonstration.
Open to DMEPOS suppliers, physician, treating practitioners, the Special Open Door Forum will provide an opportunity for suppliers and providers to receive information and ask questions about the expanded demonstration.
Participants may submit questions prior to the conference call-only event to pademo@cms.hhs.gov. The call is slated for 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time. To participate, providers should dial 1 (800) 603-1774 and enter conference ID no. 70084507. TTY communications relay services are available for the hearing impaired by dialing 7-1-1 or 1 (800) 855-2880. A relay communications assistant will help.
A transcript and audio recording of the call will be posted to the Special Open Door Forum website at http://www.cms.gov/OpenDoorForums/05_ODF_SpecialODF.asp. The recording will be available for downloading.
CMS reports that initial data has shown that the Prior Authorization Demonstration, which was implemented in seven states on Sept. 1, 2012 to cut PMD fraud, was successful in reducing spending and improper payments for PMDs. Those seven states were California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Florida and Texas.
Based on the demonstration’s initial success in reducing spending and improper payments, and the support received by various stakeholders, CMS seeks to expand the current demonstration to 12 additional states, for a total of 19 states, with all demonstration requirements remaining the same. Those states are Pennsylvania, Ohio, Louisiana, Missouri, Maryland, New Jersey, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Washington, and Arizona.
