SPORTS N’SPOKES Names Winners of 2019 Wheels UP! Accessible Travel Photo Contest

November 4, 2019 by Haley Samsel

Richard Corbett winning imageWheels UP! accessible travel photo contest hosted by SPORTS N’SPOKES, the sports and recreation magazine published by the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Co-sponsored by Abilities Expo and Cure Medical, the contest encouraged people with disabilities to share photos of themselves traveling the globe and taking part in adaptive sports. A team of judges, including adaptive surfer Christiaan “Otter” Bailey and iPush Foundation director Chris Malcolm, reviewed submissions from hundreds of participants.

Richard Corbett, a video creator from Atlanta, submitted the 2019 contest’s winning photo, which depicts him working out at the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, California. On his YouTube channel Wheels2Walking, Corbett produces videos for “newly injured wheelchair users to help improve their quality of life and regain independence,” according to his channel.

His photo appears on the front cover of the November SPORTS ‘N SPOKES issue. In addition, Corbett will receive a $1,000 Southwest Airlines gift card courtesy of Cure Medical and five copies of the magazine.

The judges also named David Nickelson as the second place winner for a photograph of him off-roading along the rim of the Grand Canyon in Yellowstone National Park. Nickelson’s photo appears in the November issue, and he will receive a $1,000 gift card from AMS Vans along with three magazine copies.
