A new negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) system from U.K.-based Smith+Nephew is aimed at treating patients living at home.
In an April 1 news announcement, Smith+Nephew introduced the RENASYS EDGE, describing it as “a patient-centric option for treating chronic wounds” that is lightweight and compact, making it easy to be carried or worn. The system’s canister was designed to operate quietly to avoid causing disruptions as it works.
“It is estimated that the annual financial burden of chronic wounds in the U.S. is $33 billion and affecting some 8.2 million people,” the announcement said, citing 2014 statistics published in the journal Diabetes Care. “The RENASYS EDGE System is designed for patients suffering from these wounds and living at home. Chronic wounds, including ulcers, have a huge impact on a patient’s life beyond just the pain and discomfort, with 68% often becoming self-conscious of their wound and many becoming isolated. The need to carry a bulky, noisy medical device that draws attention to their condition only increases this discomfort.”
The RENASYS EDGE will be distributed via national provider SunMED Medical Solutions, based in Marlton, New Jersey, as well as through First Nation Group, which is based in Niceville, Florida, and provides services and products to veterans.
“When designing the RENASYS EDGE System, we kept patients and their needs in the forefront of our minds,” said Laura Ackerman, Smith+Nephew’s vice president and general manager, NPWT. “It’s the very definition of our purpose — Life Unlimited — allowing patients to continue with their daily lives while receiving prescribed negative pressure wound therapy. And now with SunMED in the commercial health-care market and First Nation Group supporting our veterans, RENASYS EDGE will be able to create a lasting impact on the way patients experience the benefit of negative pressure wound therapy in the comfort of their home.”
Smith+Nephew is supporting clinicians by providing a clinical hotline and 24-hour customer support for the RENASYS Edge. “Technical support is just one click away during setup with the near field communication feature on the system,” Smith+Nephew added.
