Resmed has launched a new, clinically focused resource that focuses on better understanding and supporting sleep health.
Sleep Institute: Clinical Insights by Resmed is a “global clinical insights initiative focused on advancing the science and understanding of sleep health,” and was created with the support of researchers, clinicians, health-care stakeholders and policy makers, Resmed said in a Sept. 3 announcement.
Sleep Institute’s mission is “to turn research into actionable guidance to help health-care leaders make informed decisions, addressing a system-wide gap in sleep health innovation.” Its website said the project seeks to advance “the science and practice of sleep medicine through evidence-based insights and data-driven analysis.”
At its launch, Sleep Institute content included a two-part interview with Jonna Morris, Ph.D., RN, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s school of nursing, about how obstructive sleep apnea can present differently — and how symptoms can be described differently — depending on the patient’s sex.
As an example, Morris pointed out that the STOP-BANG OSA screening tool “gives an extra point just for being male, which disadvantages women.”
Morris added, “I also observed in the qualitative work on my dissertation project women often describe pushing through sleepiness because of their responsibilities, whereas men tended to approach their daytime sleepiness more pragmatically by taking naps.”
Sleep Institute features sections for events, news, publications and insights from sleep clinicians, academics and researchers. Articles also discuss the gap between the need for better sleep and the education that could help so many people and health-care professionals worldwide to prioritize sleep health.
