Quantum Rehab Aims to Boost Disability Awareness

July 7, 2009 by HME Business

Quantum Rehab has launched Quantum Speak Out, an outreach program designed to increase disability awareness through community involvement. The program will include presentations to schools, civic groups, and organizations as well as the continued support of disability-related charities, fundraisers and events.

Quantum says that while more than 60 million Americans are affected by some kind of physical disability, the issues related to those issues remain a mystery for many. So the program aims to promote embracing diversity in the community at large, encouraging the success of people with disabilities, and answering the public’s questions regarding disabilities.

The program’s speakers include:

  • Mark Smith, consumer research manager for Quantum, who in addition to his responsibilities with Quantum administers a highly active disability website, was born with cerebral palsy and went on to obtain a master’s degree and become a widely-published author and speaker.
  • Madonna Long, Consumer Advocate, who was paralyzed as the result of a school bus accident and went on to raise a family, serve as a national advocate for disability rights, and obtain a degree in homeland security.
  • Bryan Anderson, spokesperson for Quantum Rehab and various veterans’ organizations, a veteran of Iraq who was injured in 2005 when his military Humvee encountered an explosive device, resulting in the loss of both legs and one hand.

Each speaker’s presentations include an in-depth explanation of his or her disability and background, how they meet daily challenges, the mobility devices they use, a brief discussion of varying disabilities, and a question-and-answer period.

“We recognize that mobility products are only part of the disability equation,” Smith said. “So much of disability experience is tied to how we feel about ourselves, as those with disabilities, and the ways that others react to us. It’s important to Quantum to help bridge remaining gaps, both educating and inspiring others when it comes to living with disability.”
