Product Solutions: Compression

February 1, 2010 by Laura Swift

Compression products offer providers an easy entry point to expand their cash sales businesses and expand their clientele. A wide variety of patients can benefit from compression garments, including those who might not be typical homecare patients. The range of compression garment clients includes geriatric patients, individuals with foot swelling, mild edema, varicose veins, thrombosis, varicosities and diabetes patients.

Compression products provide compression to a leg, foot, arm, or other body part to ensure proper blood flow and to prevent the build up of fluids. Compression garments are measured in millimeters of mercury and can range from 15-50 mmHg. Higher levels of pressure such as 20-30 mmHg are designed to aid severe varicosities, open face ulcers and post surgery treatment.

Connecting with the customer and teaching them the benefits of compression garments are key in a successful compression business. Some patients might find it difficult to properly fit compression socks, stockings and other garments, so providers can train staff to ensure users get the right fit. In fact, some manufacturers offer training to help provider staff become certified compression fitters.
