Permobil has officially launched its lightest-ever TiLite ultralightweight wheelchair… and it has a carbon fiber frame.
In an Oct. 2 news release, Permobil introduced the CR1 (Carbon Rigid 1). The CR1 uses “a unique production method” that “redefines mobility with its combination of user-first design, configurability, durability, and ultra-light weight.”
With a transport weight of just 9 lbs., the CR1 is available in seat widths of 13 to 19 inches, and seat depths of 13 to 19 inches. Its weight capacity is 231 lbs.
In the announcement, Chuck Witkowski, President of Permobil Americas, said, “The TiLite CR1 is a testament to our commitment to pushing boundaries and creating cutting-edge solutions that truly empower individuals with mobility challenges, enabling them to lead fulfilling and active lives. We’re incredibly proud of this innovation.”
Permobil’s Principal Product Manager, Doug Garven, designed the CR1. A long-time ultralightweight chair user himself, Garven described the CR1 as “a true dream project.”
“It’s got an aerodynamic tube shape inspired by F1 cars for effortless maneuvering, and the flat tubes at the knees provide increased surface area to maximize comfort while also making the chair ‘disappear’ when seen from the front,” Garven added.
A dual-angled front end and narrow caster arms facilitate transfers and allow wheelchair riders to pull closer to objects. The carbon fiber tubes feature a foam core to provide additional support and endurance. The CR1’s back folds easily without a hinge for easy transport; custom-profiled side guards “act as structural members to the frame” to hold the backrest in place, Permobil said.
The CR1 went on sale in the United States and Canada on Oct. 2.
