Medicare DME MACs Issue Coding Reminders on Power Wheelchair Hardware, Accessories
The bulletin focuses on electronics and single-/multiple-power option bases.

October 7, 2025 by Laurie Watanabe

Medicare’s DME MAC contractors have issued a joint reminder on proper coding for power wheelchair hardware and accessories.

In the Oct. 2 bulletin, the DME MACs said, “There is confusion regarding the billing of certain power wheelchair electronic codes. This article provides instructions on the appropriate billing of power wheelchair electronics, such as actuators, controllers, harnesses and interfaces.”

The DME MACs specifically highlighted the following codes:

E2310: Power wheelchair accessory, electronic connection between wheelchair controller and one power seating system motor, including all related electronics, indicator feature, mechanical function selection switch, and fixed mounting hardware.

E2311: Power wheelchair accessory, electronic connection between wheelchair controller and two or more power seating system motors, including all related electronics, indicator feature, mechanical function selection switch, and fixed mounting hardware.

E2313: Power wheelchair accessory, harness for upgrade to expandable controller, including all fasteners, connectors and mounting hardware, each.

E2376: Power wheelchair accessory, expandable controller, including all related electronics and mounting hardware, replacement only.

E2377: Power wheelchair accessory, expandable controller, including all related electronics and mounting hardware, upgrade provided at initial issue.

The DME MACs’ bulletin included definitions of components such as actuators; expandable controllers; harnesses; power options (e.g., tilt, recline, seat elevation, standing) added to a power wheelchair; and power seating systems.

The bulletin also reviewed the differences between HCPCS coding for multiple- and single-power-option power bases and reviewed correct coding for alternative driving controls, such as head arrays and sip-and-puff systems.
