More home medical equipment (HME) suppliers — driven by rising percentages of baby boomers who need HME, as well as by those boomers’ spending power — are operating retail businesses that sell equipment directly to consumers while skipping the Medicare justification and reimbursement process (or any other type of insurance) altogether.
