HMEB: Tell us about the SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver solution, including its top features and benefits.
Lazzaro: Drive Medical’s innovative SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver combines the intelligent customized dosing of SmartDose technology with the cost-effective efficiency of the CHAD Evolution. It automatically monitors each patient’s breathing patterns for clinically responsive oxygen delivery using the most sensitive trigger mechanism on the market. This allows it to deliver precise, reliable therapy to more patients, without increasing operational costs.
HMEB: In designing this product, what were the top goals of the design team/engineers? What did they most seek to achieve?
Lazzaro: The top goals of the Drive Medical design team and engineers in developing the SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver were to create a next-generation device that combines the intelligent, auto-adjusting dosing of SmartDose® technology with the proven cost-effective efficiency and reliability of the CHAD Evolution platform. They aimed to deliver precise, clinically responsive oxygen therapy by continuously monitoring each patient’s unique breathing patterns in real time to provide reliable bolus delivery across a wide range of patients and breathing styles, while achieving maximum oxygen conservation (up to 5:1 savings ratio), extended battery life, and a compact, lightweight, durable design that keeps operational costs low for providers and patients without compromising therapeutic performance or user comfort.
HMEB: Who and/or what were the inspirations for your winning product’s functionality, features and design elements?
Lazzaro: The SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver draws its primary inspiration from two established Drive Medical technologies. The first is the advanced, intelligent auto-adjusting SmartDose® system, which continuously monitors breathing patterns and dynamically matches oxygen delivery to a patient’s activity level for optimal comfort and saturation. The second is the reliable, cost-effective platform of the CHAD Evolution™ conserver, known for its durability, extended battery life, lightweight portability, and efficient oxygen conservation. By combining these strengths, the team created a device that better meets real-world patient and provider needs.
HMEB: Who benefits from your product? Can you offer a “typical” client profile?
Lazzaro: The SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver primarily benefits ambulatory patients with COPD and other chronic respiratory conditions who have fluctuating oxygen needs throughout the day, lower at rest and higher during activity, and who want to stay active and independent.
A typical client is an adult with moderate to severe COPD who often experiences exertional desaturation and finds traditional fixed flow systems either under deliver during activity, causing shortness of breath and fatigue, or waste oxygen at rest, leading to more frequent refills. The device’s intelligent SmartDose® auto adjusting technology continuously monitors breathing patterns to deliver precise, increased bolus doses exactly when needed while conserving oxygen otherwise. This results in better saturation, enhanced comfort, fewer desaturation episodes, and greater freedom of movement for improved quality of life.
For HME providers, the product offers efficient service to a broader patient base with a durable, user-friendly device that extends cylinder life up to a 5:1 conservation ratio, reduces delivery visits and operational costs, minimizes callbacks, and improves patient satisfaction and compliance.
HMEB: Does your winning product offer adjustability or customizability for the different needs of different consumers/users?
Lazzaro: Yes, the SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver offers excellent adjustability and customizability to meet the diverse needs of different patients. It features seven adjustable bolus settings (pulse dose levels 1 through 7) that allow clinicians or providers to precisely tailor the baseline oxygen dosage to each individual’s prescription and requirements. This ensures the device delivers the right amount of oxygen for optimal therapy at rest or during daily activities. In addition, it includes a continuous flow setting at 2 LPM as a reliable backup option. The core SmartDose auto-adjusting technology then builds on this foundation by continuously monitoring the patient’s breathing patterns in real time and automatically increasing the bolus volume as needed during exertion, while conserving oxygen when activity decreases, all without any manual intervention from the user.
This combination of manual baseline customization and intelligent automatic adaptation makes the device highly versatile, supporting a wide range of patients with varying activity levels, breathing patterns, and oxygen demands for better clinical outcomes and comfort. For HME providers, these features simplify fitting the right solution for more patients while maintaining efficiency and reliability.
HMEB: How does your winning product optimize independence, function, safety, confidence, success with everyday goals, etc., for its users?
Lazzaro: The SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver helps users live more freely and actively by responding instantly to their needs without any need for constant adjustments. Its auto-adjusting technology detects changes in breathing and activity, then provides extra oxygen right when movement or effort calls for it. This keeps energy levels steady and avoids drops in oxygen that might hold someone back. As a result, patients can handle errands, visit friends, or enjoy light recreation with less worry and more assurance. The lightweight, easy to carry design fits right into daily life, and excellent conservation means far fewer tank changes, so people can focus on what matters instead of logistics. Overall, it builds real confidence through dependable, quiet performance. Patients stay more engaged in their personal goals and routines, and HME’s see fewer visits and happier customers.
HMEB: What funding options are available for this product?
Lazzaro: The SmartDose Evolution Oxygen Conserver is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans when prescribed as part of home oxygen therapy for qualifying patients.
HMEB: What makes a product or service an HME Business New Product Award winner? What advice do you have for future entrants?
Lazzaro: If you’re a manufacturer entering a product or service, the key is to make sure it truly stands out as market-leading before you even submit. Focus on solving real problems for patients and providers in ways that others haven’t quite nailed yet. Think better mobility, smarter tech that actually makes daily life easier, or features that cut costs and hassle without cutting corners on car. Build in strong evidence early: gather patient stories, clinician feedback, or data showing improved outcomes, longer equipment life, or real savings. Make the product intuitive and durable so it feels like a natural upgrade, not just another gadget.
We focus on solutions that move the needle for independence, safety, and efficiency while fitting into the reimbursement world. Nail those patient-centered and provider-friendly benefits, and you’ll have something that speaks for itself. Good luck to everyone putting their best innovations out there!
