The Board of Certification/Accreditation (BOC) has named Dexter Moon its 2025 Certificant of the Year.

Moon is the chief operating officer of Project MEND, a 501(c)3 nonprofit focused on improving the quality of life for people living with disabilities and illness through the refurbishment, reuse and distribution of medical equipment and other assistive technology.

In an Oct. 27 announcement, BOC said Moon “is being honored for his exceptional leadership and commitment to service, innovation and outreach in the field of durable medical equipment (DME).” Moon is a BOC Certified Durable Medical Equipment Specialist (CDME), and BOC added that Moon’s leadership “embodies BOC’s core values focused on customer service, accountability and integrity.

“His Project MEND team implemented customer-centered processes that prioritize safety, efficiency and dignity while providing personalized support to assistive technology recipients,” BOC added.

Moon’s efforts to repair and refurbish DME for new owners have included using microbial-reduction robots and 3D-printed replacement parts. “His partnerships with institutions like the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio are advancing staff training and equipment reuse best practices,” the BOC announcement said. Moon serves “as a capstone mentor for a doctoral student in occupational therapy at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center.”

Moon has also partnered with Medical Bridges and the Christian Medical and Dental Association to provide refurbished DME to children in Mexico and other underserved areas.

“We are incredibly proud to honor Dexter as our 2025 Certificant of the Year,” said BOC President/CEO Judi Knott, MA, MBA, CAE. “His tireless dedication to improving access to care, uplifting patients and strengthening communities — both locally and globally — reflects the heart of this award. We are glad to recognize a professional whose compassion, innovation and service have improved the quality of so many lives.”

“I am humbled to receive BOC’s 2025 Certificant of the Year Award,” said Moon in the announcement. “My BOC certification has equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to lead with purpose, but it’s our Project MEND team and partners who bring that purpose to life every day. Together, we’re breaking down barriers to care and helping people live with greater independence and improved quality of life.”

BOC’s annual Certificant of the Year program honors a BOC-certified professional who has delivered outstanding service to patients, achieved notable work in research, dedication to the community and outreach to developing countries. Candidates must be certificants in good standing in BOC’s certification areas of DME, mastectomy fitter, orthotic fitter, orthotist, pedorthotist or prosthetist.
