Appeals and rebuttals for Medicare durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) claims will be processed by the National Provider Enrollment (NPE) DMEPOS contractors going forward.
As of May 8, Chags Health Information Technology (C-HIT) will no longer be handling those submissions. Starting on that date, suppliers “must be sent to the appropriate NPE based on the supplier’s enrollment jurisdiction,” Palmetto GBA, the NPWest contractor said.
The American Association for Homecare (AAHomecare) sent a bulletin with the update to members and stakeholders on May 5.
Two contractors will cover 50 states, 6 territories
Novitas Solutions is the NPEast contractor for suppliers in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Palmetto will handle appeals and rebuttals for Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, plus American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.
“Jurisdiction is determined based on the supplier’s enrollment record,” Palmetto noted. “Suppliers should ensure their enrollment information is current.”
Appeal rebuttal processes and requirements; submission standards, documentation and timelines; and CMS oversight and policy guidance won’t be changing. C-HIT will process appeals and rebuttals submitted before May 8.
Editor’s note (May 6, 2026): The incorrect story initially ran under this headline. HME Business updated the article to focus on DMEPOS appeals and rebuttals transitioning to NPE contractors.
