CMS Announces 70 MSAs, 8 Categories for Round 2 of Competitive Bidding

January 8, 2008 by HME Business

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the next 70
MSAs for the second phase of its competitive bidding program. The new
MSAs, situated across the United States, bring the total number of
participating MSAs to 80 when factoring in round one of the program.

While
CMS announced the 70 MSAs it has yet to release the zip codes within
those MSAs or a time line for this second phase. The decision was made
to announce the MSAs so that providers in those areas could make
preparations and ensure they are accredited, according to Joel Kaiser,
deputy director of DMEPOS policy. Zip codes for those MSAs and dates
should be announced this spring, according to CMS.

In addition to
the MSAs, CMS also announced eight DMEPOS product categories that will
be covered under the second phase. They are:

  1. Oxygen Supplies and Equipment
  2. Standard Power Wheelchairs, Scooters, and Related Accessories
  3. Complex Rehabilitative Power Wheelchairs and Related Accessories
  4. Enteral Nutrients, Equipment, and Supplies
  5. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Devices, Respiratory Assist Devices (RADs), and Related Supplies and Accessories
  6. Hospital Beds and Related Accessories
  7. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Pumps and Related Supplies and Accessories
  8. Walkers and Related Accessories

Like
the zip codes and timeline for phase two, CMS says it will release the
specific items falling under each category in coming months.
