Cardinal Health Opens New Distribution Center Focused on Home Health Business
The company is bolstering its distribution network amid the expanding home health-care sector.

September 3, 2024 by Shelby Grebbin

Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH) has announced the opening of a new 350,000-square-foot distribution center in Greenville, South Carolina.

The new center is dedicated to its at-home solutions business.

According to Cardinal Health, the new facility is expected to create approximately 200 jobs in the region over time. It’s part of Cardinal Health’s broader strategy to bolster its nationwide distribution network amid the expanding home health-care sector.

The decision to establish the facility in Greenville was influenced by the region’s strong manufacturing and distribution industry, which offers a skilled workforce ideally suited for the operation of this state-of-the-art center, Rob Schlissberg, president of Cardinal Health’s at-Home Solutions business, said in a press release.

“There’s tremendous growth opportunity as health care continues to shift to the home,” he said. “Consumers are setting the stage – they want to manage their health conditions comfortably from home, something that’s especially important to our aging population,” he said.”

This expansion comes at a time when the home health-care industry is experiencing significant growth.

According to a May 2024 report by Fortune Business Insights, the U.S. home health-care market is projected to grow from more than $100 billion in 2024 to $176.3 billion by 2032. This surge is largely driven by an aging population and the rising prevalence of chronic conditions, as highlighted by the National Council on Aging, which estimates that by 2040, more than 80 million Americans will be 65 or older.

What’s more, an increasing number of older adults prefer to receive services in the home compared to other care settings, such as skilled nursing facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic only accelerated that trend.

The Greenville distribution center is equipped with advanced automation, artificial intelligence and robotics technology, enabling it to handle and ship nearly 8,000 packages daily, according to Cardinal.

These packages include a range of essential medical supplies, from diabetic monitors to breast pumps, which are shipped directly to patients’ homes.

“Our expansion into Greenville allows us to continue to deliver on our promises to customers and their patients, while creating a resilient supply chain to support this sustained growth,” Schlissberg continued.

Cardinal Health is a distributor of pharmaceuticals and medical products, with operations in more than 30 countries and approximately 48,000 employees worldwide.
