AASM: Let’s Stick with Standard Time
If you dread turning your clocks forward and back in the spring and fall, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is on your side.
As the Nov. 2 return to standard time approaches, the AASM has cited a March 2025 Gallup poll that said 54% of Americans want to stay permanently on standard time, while 24% want to stay permanently on daylight saving time. Just 19% of survey respondents said they prefer the current method of moving clocks forward an hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall.
Permanent daylight saving time, however, could impact public safety, the AASM said: “Permanent daylight saving time would lead to darker mornings, especially during the shorter days of winter, and disrupt sleep patterns, which can increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents. In some parts of the U.S., sunrise wouldn’t occur until after 9 a.m. in the winter, putting children at risk as they wait for the bus or walk to school in the dark.”
“By making standard time permanent, we can help Americans live healthier and more productive lives year round,” said Dr. Karin Johnson, sleep medicine physician and co-chair of the Coalition for Permanent Standard Time’s steering committee, of which AASM is the founding member. “When our schedules align with the timing of natural light, people benefit from brighter mornings, safer commutes to work and school, and improved sleep at night.”
ASPEN Announces 2026 Champion Award Winner
The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) has named Steven Plogsted, PharmD, FASPEN, its 2026 ASPEN Champion Award winner.
Plogsted was described in an Oct. 7 ASPEN news announcement as a retired clinical pharmacist who worked in the nutrition support service division of Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
“Dr. Plogsted has been persistently consistent in his support of ASPEN,” said Mark Corkins, M.D, CNSC, in the announcement. “He has served on more than 15 ASPEN committees, work groups and task forces, including chairing the drug shortage committee, the program committee, and the pediatrics section.
