HME Legal Expert Passes Away

Civil liberties leader and healthcare law specialist Neil Caesar succumbs to complications related to long-term illness.

HME industry attorney Neil Caesar, president of the Health Law Center, passed away on Feb 11 at age 60 due to complications related to a long-term illness. He is survived by his wife, Courtney Kyle Caesar.

A memorial service for Caesar will be held Sat., Feb 24, at Mackey Mortuary in Greenville, S.C. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Eastern, and the service starts at 2 p.m.

An expert in healthcare law, Caesar was a frequent and valued speaker at Medtrade events, according to Kevin Gaffney, group show director for Medtrade.

“Neil was a vital part of the Medtrade family for so long, and we are all saddened by his death,” Gaffney said. “Our thoughts are with his family. … In his professional life, he imparted so much wisdom to hundreds, if not thousands, of Medtrade attendees throughout the years. He will be sorely missed.”

Despite the complexities of health law, Caesar could explain convoluted topics to show attendees in an easy-to-understand fashion, recalled Greg Thompson, editor of Medtrade Monday.

“Neil was the first person I encountered as a journalist at Medtrade,” Thompson said. “Right away, it was obvious he had a razor-sharp intellect. After his press briefing, I sheepishly asked follow-up questions and he patiently explained the issues yet again in a more ‘beginner’ fashion.

“… As a professional in the healthcare industry, he had a remarkable grasp of his field,” Thompson continued. “Real expertise is not common, but Neil was a member of that small club of people who had answers, and you knew those answers were correct.”

In addition to his work with the Health Law Center, Caesar also served as corporate counsel to Foster Medical Corporation and Abbey Homecare (which became Apria Homecare). He was also vice president of the Health Care Group Inc. Additionally, Caesar served as president of South Carolina’s American Civil Liberties Union affiliate.
