Medtrade Session Offers Some Good News About Audits

Oct. 24 presentation from van Halem Group duo will examine the ways in which CMS is changing the way CMS is performing some audits --some for the better.

While most industry education about audits skews from bad news to full-blown fear and loathing, a session at the upcoming Medtrade conference and expo could offer some more optimistic information.

Industry audit experts Wayne van Halem, president and founder of audit consulting firm The van Halem Group, as well as Kelly Grahovac, senior consultant at the van Halem Group, will host “Audits & Compliance: He Said/She Said - Is the Glass Half Full or Half Empty?” on Oct. 24 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. to offer differing insights and perspectives on new developments with Medicare claims audits.

“For the first time since I’ve been doing presentations on the topic of audits, we actually have good news to share,” van Halem noted. “… CMS officials are changing the way they perform audits and the audit approach. There are important things people need to know. They are lessening some restrictions, and providers need to know that.

“I’d love for people to walk away from a Medtrade presentation by the van Halem group and not be scared to death,” he joked.

There will be elements of claims audits that won’t change and that might change, van Halem noted, which makes the update a key learning opportunity. All told, Grahovac said that the panel might be toward the end of the day, but it’s one attendees won’t want to miss.

“We are going to keep everyone engaged,” Gahovac said. “We do well bouncing information off of each other. It’s probably the last session of the evening, but folks will be engaged, maybe laugh a little, and they will be prepared for what is to come. In this presentation, we are not going to be the dark cloud.”

Medtrade runs from Oct. 23 to 25 at Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center.
