Last week’s DME MAC clarification on billing power wheelchair (PWC) electronics for Medicare beneficiaries “is a step in the right direction of providing clear coverage guidelines for Medicare,” the American Association for Homecare (AAHomecare) said in a June 3 bulletin.
The AAHomecare message refers to a May 30 article from CGS Administrators, the Jurisdiction B and Jurisdiction C DME MAC.
“The article details coverage scenarios for electronic connections between wheelchair controllers and power wheelchair electronics (E2310, E2311), expandable controllers (E2377), and electronic harnesses (E2313), shedding light on when Medicare considers each to be covered with certain power wheelchair seating system configurations,” the bulletin said.
AAHomecare added that the new guidance from CGS can also be used to ensure that Medicare Advantage plans are providing proper coverage.
“This clarification can be used with Medicare Advantage plans to demonstrate what the coverage criteria is for Medicare fee for service and should be allowed for all Medicare Advantage plans,” the bulletin said.
CGS said the guidance was issued because “there is confusion regarding the billing of wheelchair electronics. This article provides instructions on appropriate billing of power wheelchair electronics, such as motors, controllers, harnesses and interfaces.”
