Auto access products are designed to help people with limited mobility
hit the road and travel independently. Services and products
range from the entry level, such as ramps and simple lifts, to the more
detailed, such as complete vehicle conversions. Many HMEs can ease
their way into providing auto access with the more “entry level” products,
as those items often do not necessitate the tools and expertise that
massive van conversion projects require.
For instance, ramps are used for patients that are traveling with a
caregiver who can help them get in and out of the vehicle, and that
help take care of getting the mobility device in and out of the vehicle.
Or they can be used for patients with only limited mobility that can be
ambulatory for short durations of time and that are capability of setting
up the ramp and loading and unloading the device on their own.
Also, lifts attach to a vehicle and allow a power mobility device user
or caregiver to roll the device onto the lift, secure it and hit the road.
But, they do not require overhaul of a vehicle like a conversion would.
Auto access continues to provide an attractive retail sales category
for providers, which is important because tighter Medicare funding has
forced providers to seek new revenue streams. Here are some recent

Carrot 3 Special Needs Child Restraint System
Designed for children and teens 3 to 15
The Convaid Carrot 3 Special Needs Child Restraint System is designed for children and teens from approximately age 3 to 15. The back of this booster reclines flat (180 degrees) from a fully upright position (90 degrees). Optional extensions allow for years of potential growth. The contoured headrest, body conforming foam and optional shoulder wings improve side impact protection. The firm lateral supports are optional and encourage midline alignment of the trunk. The inserts for the seat, hips and trunk come standard and provide custom positioning.
High capacity power chair lift allows for reduced effort
Harmar introduced the AL425HD, a 450 pound capacity Power Chair Hoist. The AL425HD offers powered lifting and rotation functions that reduces effort to load a large variety of power chairs. It offers a built-in offset post that allows the mobility device to be easily loaded from the side of a vehicle. Due to the increased weight of the power chairs – the AL425HD is ideal for pick-up trucks and full size vans. It is designed with adjustable base adapters for faster installation and comes with a weather resistant hand control or an optional wireless control if preferred.
AL015 Profile Micro Scooter Lift
Scooter lift with compact, lightweight design
Harmar released an enhanced version of its popular AL015 Profile Micro Scooter Lift. This standard three-wheel lift now features an optional cradle to handle four-wheel scooters. Additionally, in either configuration, the wheel cradles are now adjustable to handle a wider variety of scooters up to 22” wide and wheelbases from 26” to 36”. The AL015’s lift capacity has been increased from 135 pounds to 150 pounds. The simple, compact and lightweight profile design provides greater visibility to drivers when stowed, and with a lighter install weight of 65 pounds it can be used on more vehicles equipped with a Class I hitch.

Convaid Launches Carrot 3 Booster Seat
Convaid Products LLC and R82 Inc.’s Etac Junior Product Group
have launched its latest child restraint product, the Convaid
Carrot 3 Booster Seat, which now accommodates growth into
adolescence and adulthood. The Carrot 3 booster seat can
accommodate growth for special needs children and adults
ranging from 79 lbs. to 165 lbs. in weight and 55 in. to 69 in. in
height. Growth is accomplished through a system of back inserts
and the width-adjustable shoulder protector wings. Optional high
density foam inserts allow for optimal positioning and maximum
comfort. It provides ergonomic head support for optimal
positioning and side impact protection and can recline
to a flat position for diaper changes.
