Triple W Showcases DFree Bowel Sensor Prototype at CES

Adding to its products addressing incontinence, the company says it plans to introduce the bowel sensor to senior care communities in 2020.

DFree Bowel SensorAfter successfully introducing the DFree urinary incontinence device to the U.S. market in 2018, Triple W offered attendees of the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show a preview of its latest innovation: the DFree bowel sensor.

The company showcased a prototype at the Las Vegas show this week, calling it the first wearable device for bowel incontinence. Aiming to help patients and caregivers prevent accidents, the bowel sensor monitors bowel and intestinal movements with a noninvasive ultrasound sensor. Similar to the DFree urinary device, the sensor will notify the patient or caregiver via smartphone or tablet when it’s time to head to the bathroom.

DFree, which stands for diaper-free, is aiming to address a common problem for a growing population of seniors living at home. A 2014 study by the Centers for Disease Control found that almost 51 percent of older Americans struggle with incontinence. Accidental urinary leakage was reported by about 44 percent of people aged 65 and older, and 17 percent reported bowel incontinence.

While Triple W did not commit to a release date for the bowel sensor, the company said it expects to trial release the product this year “within senior care communities.”

Ty Takayanagi, Triple W’s vice president of marketing and business development, told HME Business last year that DFree products can help patients “regain confidence and dignity.”

“Because the first time you have an accident — we’ve seen this over and over again — that people lose confidence,” Takayanagi said. “They stop going out. They stop drinking water, in some extreme cases. So hopefully our device will have them regain their active lifestyle. That’s what we aim for.”
