Competitive bidding runaround strands wheelchair patient for four weeks.

Homecare advocacy group People for Quality Care has released a new video that describes a particular distressing account of a wheelchair patient being stranded for four weeks with no battery, all because of competitive bidding.

In the video, Jim Kokenge president and CEO of PAX Medical Supply recalls how after not winning a bid for to provide power wheelchairs, a long-time patient came to him needing a new battery for her chair.

Unable to assist her after being eliminated by Round One, Kokenge explained to her that she would need to call 1-800-MEDICARE to get help. What ensued was a month-long, Kafka-esque runaround from CMS best described in Kokenge’s words. View the video here:
