Special ODF Reviews Bidding Registration Deadlines, Accreditation

CMS staff remind providers of round one registration deadlines, answer accreditation questions.

During this week’s special Open Door Forum for the rebid of round one of its DMEPOS competitive bidding program — the second in an eight-call series — CMS staff reminded providers that the deadline for registering authorized officials (AOs) is Monday, Sept 14.

Staff went on to say that backup authorized officials (BAOs) must be registered by Oct. 9 and that end users (EUs) should be registered by the final registration deadline, which is Nov. 4 at 9 p.m. Easter Time.

Additionally, with the Sept. 30 accreditation deadline nearly here, staff also fielded a number of questions related to accreditation, especially from pharmacies offering DME, of which many were under the mistaken impression that they would not have to obtain CMS accreditation to bill for DME. Staff sais that If a pharmacy is selling DME, then it must be accredited by the deadline in order to continue billing Medicare. If it cannot then a pharmacy can amend its enrollment via a CMS 855S to only offer drugs and other pharmacological supplies.

Moreover, even if any DME provider has a surety bond, is living up to its accreditation standards and is ready for a site visit, but will not receive that site visit by the deadline, it must submit a CMS 855S enrollment form essentially withdrawing their supplier number from billing Medicare, while still retaining their supplier number so that they can reapply at a later date.
