Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose
(blood sugar). When a person has diabetes, the body either
does not produce enough insulin or is unable to use its own insulin
effectively. Glucose builds up in the blood and causes a condition

Diabetes is on the rise in the United States. Currently, one in 10
U.S. adults have the disease, but the Centers for Disease Control and

One way HME providers can help diabetic patients manage their
conditions is through the sale of glucose monitors, continuous glucose
monitors and test strips. Diabetic patients also are particularly vulnerable
to foot care and wound issues related to injuries or trauma from
shoes. HME providers can assist with those issues by providing appropriate
footwear and compression products.
HME providers are being impacted by the expansion of competitive
bidding to cover mail-order diabetic supplies. CMS anticipates that the
Round Two and national mail-order program contracts and prices will
be implemented in July 2013.
