North Carolina’s General Assembly voted to pass S. 523, a bill that includes provisions to make prescribed diapers and incontinence products that are covered under the. Medicaid exempt from state sales tax as of Oct. 1.
The bill now goes to N.C. Gov. Roy. Cooper for him to sign into law. The full text of S. 523 can be downloaded as a PDF.
The support for the incontinence provisions (appearing on pages 26 and 27 of the bill’s language) came from a dedicated push by industry stakeholders in the state, according to the American Association for Homecare (AAHomecare). The Atlantic Coast Medical Equipment Services Association (ACMESA) and those stakeholders will work to advance retroactive relief for North Carolina incontinence providers.
“ACMESA and leaders in the North Carolina HME community deserve credit for making sure that state legislators understood the need for this common-sense fix that will help medically vulnerable patients and caregivers throughout the state,” added David Chandler, director of payer relations for AAHomecare. “I would like to especially thank ActivStyle and Aeroflow for devoting significant time and energy in advocating for this measure.”
“This is a great win for the industry that was accomplished by the collaborative work of our lobbyist working with AAHomecare, ACMESA, and other provider lobbyists,” said Gayle Devins, CEO of incontinence supply company ActivStyle. “Great things can be accomplished when we work together!”
